Before the 1948 war both Jews and Arabs lived in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah. The Jews were evacuated soon after the war started and were compensated by the State of Israel for the property they left behind.
Since 1967 Jews managed to return to this neighborhood and evict Arabs from houses they inhabited for many years.
