Happy New Years is a unique epistolary novel: not an exchange, but a chain of letters written once a year, spreading over 50 years. Beautiful young Leah goes to the U.S. in 1967 to try her luck.
Soon she establishes the habit of writing every year, on New Year's eve, a letter to her old friends from the teachers' academy. This is a story about emigration, about growing up, big hopes and deep disappointments, but also a story of the love to live and to write.
Maya Arad was born in Israel (1971) and grew up in Kibbutz Nahal-Oz. She graduated in Classics and Linguistics at the Tel Aviv University and has a Ph.D. in Linguistics from London University.
Her first book Another Place, a Foreign City, a novel in rhymes won the Ministry of Education and Culture award and in 2005 was Shortlisted for the Sapir prize (the Israeli Booker).
Happy New Years is her 10th novel. She lives in Stanford with her husband and two daughters.
